There are over 40 self-administered and regional First Nations police services across Canada; however First Nations Policing in this country is still relatively new. As a result, many First Nations Police Services are still in the process of developing community capacity and strong police governance commissions to administer the overall governance issues associated with the operation and maintenance of police services.

Thus, the First nations Police Governance Authority Steering Committee was established in the Fall of 2002 to assist current and newly formed police governance authorities by providing training initiatives, such as the development of training seminars and policy development workshops, to enlist facilitators and presenters and to develop training topics for First Nations Police Governance Authority members across Canada.

The Committee provides guidance to Police Governance members who may be newly appointed to a Police Governance Authority in any of the approximately 40 self-administered First Nations Police Services. The Police governance authorities are responsible for overseeing either regional or stand alone police services

The FNPGA Steering Committee meets to discuss the current status of First Nations police governance generally, to identify topics of interest to police services and police governance boards and develop training workshops on current issues facing police services and police governance authorities.
